Doctor Terry Wepsic

Location: Huntington Beach, CA

As a physician, Dr. Terry Wepsic understood why proton therapy was the best choice for his cancer treatment. He also recognized the value of staying healthy and active while undergoing treatment. By taking advantage of the many recreational opportunities available to Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) patients, he was able to keep his body in top condition. Doctor Wepsic noted, "I spent about two hours a day exercising, then I would get in my car and go home."

Pastor Donald McPhaul

Location: Huntington Beach, CA

Location: Fontana, CA

When diagnosed with prostate cancer, church pastor Donald McPhaul shared the concerns of many men with his condition. Negative side effects of traditional radiation treatment for prostate cancer, including impotency and incontinence, were very real possibilities. Fortunately the accuracy of proton radiation therapy gave McPhaul peace of mind. "If you can find a treatment to alleviate that concern, I think you’ve got 90% of the battle taken care of," says McPhaul.

Jennifer Gardener

Location: Loma Linda, CA

A life-long athlete and outdoor enthusiast, Jennifer Gardener wasn't ready to let brain cancer get in the way of her passions. Painless, non-invasive proton radiation treatment for brain cancer allowed her to keep her energy high. Although she was not able to surf, due to brain surgery, sports remained part of her daily routine. "I was still running track, cross-country. I was doing all the things a normal person would do," she says.

Gary and Alea Culpepper

Location: Woodwinville, WA

For Gary Culpepper, coming to LLUMC was about more than curing his cancer. It was about restoring his spirit. To his surprise, the treatments were quick, easy and pain-free. As a result, Culpepper and his wife Alea were able to spend quality time together in the warm, welcoming surroundings provided by the Proton Treatment Center.  "The treatment is just such a minor part of the whole experience. You just don't really realize you have cancer when you're going through proton therapy treatment," says Culpepper.

Bob Marckini

Location: Matapoisett, MA

As a successful MBA, Bob Marckini was no stranger to assessing risk. So when it came to choosing proton cancer treatment, comparing options was important. After comparing it to traditional methods of treatment of prostate cancer, proton therapy became the obvious choice. As a painless, non-invasive treatment with significantly less risk of damaging side effects, proton therapy was an option that could help Bob without compromising his quality of life. "Very simple decision," Bob explained. "It was a no brainer for me."
